Lost Trail

Can you see the abandoned route traversing diagonally up the green slopes on the left, leading up to the saddle point above the wash on the ridge? Though once well-beaten, this route was never officially sanctioned. When the Alpine Lakes Wilderness came into being, the rules about "maximum party of 12" (including persons and pack animals) squeezed the large-scale commercial outfitters out of business. Their going was not widely mourned, since they had developed a reputation for savage abuse of the area for firewood, grazing, and camps. But when they left, this old route and most of the area around it was mostly forgotten.
