Exploring the Ridge

The next day was our exploratory ridge-top loop trip. The first task was to reach the ridge — just 0.2 more miles of abandoned trail, and relatively mild at that. But as usual, very tricky to find.

Once on top, the travel becomes easier. The idea was to follow the ridge top north until it reached the current Crest Trail at Cathedral Pass, on the south shoulder of Cathedral Rock.

The top of Cathedral Ridge remains high and even, with open meadows and plenty of wide views. There are spotty fragments of another abandoned trail here. I believe that at one time this was a major side trail between the old Crest Trail and the Peggy's Pond area, where a cabin was located (now a broken relic). This would have been the most logical way to reach it before the new Crest Trail sections were available.
